William T. Calhoun earned his Associates in Graphic Design at the Florida School of the Arts and his BFA in Illustration at Columbia College Chicago. William’s experience ranges from fine art and graphic design to scenic painting and set design. His work has been exhibited nationally in numerous venues, including the Museum of Science and Industry and the DuSable Museum of African American Art in Chicago.
CALHOUNart is an artistic reflection of William’s life journey, from the early stages in the rural south through the migration to the urban north and back home to his southern roots. From the first time he painted a picture while in the military in Eschborn, Germany, he became enpowered to unleash the images in his mind onto the canvas. Creating nostalgic images inspired by childhood experiences and cultural influences is his passion. William’s illustrations also depict current stories of urban life, justice, and spirituality.
William’s strengths include a keen eye for detail and an ability to capture a story using rich and descriptive colors. He builds his paintings using the scenic architecture of familiar landscapes and cityscapes. As he continues to add works to his painting series and develop new series, his goal is to merge history, culture, and social consciousness to commemorate the African American experience on canvas. He believes that “painting has the power to preserve the past, capture the present, and create the future.”
